Know the Reasons Why Women Drink Alcohol

Alcoholism has become common among people irrespective of their age, gender, employment or marital status. The number of women having alcohol has been increasing these days in the United States. Alcoholic women are more prone to severe health risks when compared to alcoholic men. They are found to face unique health concerns such as depression, anxiety, and cancer much earlier than men.

Certain common reasons influence women to drink alcohol and they include self-medication, stress management and to feel more in control. Women often drink alcohol as a way of self-medication in order to treat anxiety, depression or any other mental health concerns. Instead of getting treated, alcohol is considered to magnify these problems.

Stress management is one of the common reasons for women to get addicted to alcohol. They need to manage stress from different angles of their lives. They have to manage a career, a relationship, children, family commitments and other pressures. These things make them stressed and in order to get relief from it, they try to use alcohol. However, alcohol provides relief from stress only for a short period of time, and later the stress levels may increase again.

Some women even drink alcohol to feel more in control and more confident. They want to show that they are equal to men in status and drink alcohol to prove them. They also drink to lower sexual inhibitions. Also, they are more likely to take alcohol to deal an emotional problem like loneliness or to deal with a major life change.

Many societal problems also provoke women to use alcohol. The most important risk factor for women alcohol abuse is the history of sexual abuse. Even eating disorders may arise alcoholic usage in women. Whatever the reason may be, ultimately alcohol affects their health.
