What effects do anabolic steroids have on behavior?

The abuse of anabolic steroid affects even the behavior of person apart from health. Case reports and small studies illustrate that anabolic steroids, when used in high doses, intensify irritability and aggression. Some steroid abusers inform that they committed aggressive acts like physical fighting or armed robbery, theft, vandalism, or burglary. Abusers who have performed aggressive acts or property crimes usually report that they get engaged in these aggressive behaviors more frequently when they use steroids than when they are drug free. A recent study reveals that the mood and behavioral effects observed during anabolic-androgenic steroid abuse develop due to secondary hormonal changes.

The extent to which steroid abuse leads to violence and behavioral disorders is not known. Compared with the health problems of steroid abuse, the existence of extreme cases of violence and behavioral disorders is low, but it can be underreported.

Research also suggests that some users might use other drugs to lessen some of the negative effects of anabolic steroids. For an instance, a study of 227 men admitted in 1999 into a private treatment center for treatment to addiction of heroin or other opiods found that 9.3 percent had abused to anabolic steroids before taking any other illicit drug. Of these 9.3 percent, 86 percent initially used opioid to prevent insomnia and irritability, which are caused from the use of anabolic steroids.
