Normally seasonal clothing like the winter clothing is used only for short periods and for the majority of time they should be stored until arrival of winter. Following are some of the simple steps to protect and store the clothes in the same condition:
- Clean the winter clothing before storing. Laundering also helps to protect the clothes form the insects.
- Store the winter clothing in a good sized closet which is well ventilated, away from drafts and vast temperature changes, to hold the winter clothing. Suit cases lined with acid free tissue can also be used to store the winter clothing.
- Sweaters or other knit items should not be hanged because they may become misshapen and are not likely to regain their original shape. Sweaters and casual clothing can be loosely folded and placed into airtight containers.
- It is better to store the clothing according to the categories like shirts, coats, skirts, etc.
- It is good to wrap the delicate or silk clothing in cotton sheet or pillowcase before being storing these clothes in an airtight container.
- Do not fold the clothes, instead roll them to keep them free from wrinkles and creases.
- Store the clothes in a container in which air is circulated freely because fabric should be able to breathe.
- The storage area for the winter clothes should be clean, cool, dark and dry, as a dark place will prevent the clothing from fading and helps in keeping it cool.
- Hang items like pants or skirts, hang them from the waistband.
- Addition of natural moth sachets to hangers and container especially those containing wool and silk articles protects the clothing from insects.
Since winter clothing are used occasionally, they require very good storage methods.
